A: An enclosed space is defined by OSHA as an area large enough for workers to enter, but not intended for permanent use.
Enclosed spaces have restricted or restricted entry and exit points. These characteristics mean that gas levels can change quickly, making the atmosphere dangerous without the slightest warning. For this reason, it is important for participants and explorers of caves in confined spaces to know not only if the space is safe at any given time, but also how dangerous the conditions are so that they have time. safety.
So how do you protect employees in a confined space? Give them direct reading displays. In fact, OSHA requires the use of direct-read monitors when checking the atmosphere in a confined space prior to entry.
You might want to use gas monitors for alarms only, because they promise simplicity – your team only needs to know if the equipment is in alarm, and when it is in alarm, they evacuate the area.
However, alarm monitors alone will not provide workers with the information or time they need to prepare for dangerous situations.
Assume that before entering the confined space, the worker only uses the sensor to alarm to take readings in the confined space, and the alarm does not go off. The oxygen level was 19.5% above the minimum safe level, but only slightly above the minimum safe level.
The worker then assumes the space is safe and enters. It may take only a few minutes before oxygen levels fall below safe levels without workers being notified to leave the confined space. If the worker is lucky, this can lead to a hasty exit, otherwise it can lead to tragedy.
On the other hand, if workers were using direct-reading monitors, they would know that the room’s oxygen levels were hardly safe before entering, and could ventilate the room or delay entry.
Direct read monitors show workers how safe the atmosphere is and give them the ability to recognize patterns and respond to changing gas levels.
In addition to checking the atmosphere with a direct reading monitor, it is recommended to constantly monitor atmospheric conditions before entering a confined space.
Even between regular checks, the gas level can be unpredictable and change rapidly. Personal gas monitors with insertable sampling pumps allow workers to use their pre-entry sampling device and then remove the pump and wear it on their lapel for continuous monitoring in confined spaces.
Confined space workers are not the only ones who can benefit from using direct-read monitors – 60 percent of confined space fatalities can be rescuers.
There are personal and regional monitors that can connect wirelessly to share real-time gas concentration information and warnings.
This provides all personnel on site with the information they may need for a safe rescue. This connectivity allows waiters to see your workers even if they can’t see or hear them.
Confined spaces are dangerous, but you can reduce the risk by following OSHA guidelines and guidelines. Providing your employees with direct-read monitors, especially those that constantly monitor the atmosphere and connect wirelessly, is the best way to help them return home safely at the end of the day.
